Airport Drama

Drama. When Molly gets on an airplane, there will be drama. Count on it. It is always something. Lost luggage. Heart attacks in the back of the plane. More lost luggage. A not-so-subtle proposition regarding the Mile-High Club. Rain delays. Mechanical delays. And my favorite, the metal clip in my jaw that always causes a scene at security.

And, of coarse, my trip from Seattle to Jackson this past weekend was as dramatic as ever...

Besides the usual flash light down my throat and the pat-down by a burly female, I got out of Seattle and arrived in Atlanta with ease and even ahead of schedule. But that is where it all went wrong. My flight was over an hour delayed and was WAY over-booked. I waited. And I waited.

The airline eventaully started making offers for people to give up their seats and fly to Jackson the next morning at 9:30. I waited until the price was right and jumped on it. Well, apparently I don't weigh enough to qualify for a $400 voucher. The guy looked at me and he LAUGHED! "Lady, you obviously didn't hear me. I said that the the plane was over the weight limit. It would do me no good to leave you here. I need a few"bigger"people to volunteer." He agreed to put me on the list as a "last resort". Now it you would, just please pause for a moment and imagine the extreme awkardness amoungst the passengers sitting at the gate contemplating the "weight" problem.

We finally board the plane (over an hour late) and then proceed to sit on the runway for over an hour waiting for our turn to take off. When we finally took off, I looked at my watch...ok, we should be on the ground in an hour. But, 1 hour and 1/2 later, we were still flying. And 2 hours later, we are still flying. 2 and 1/2 hours later, we are still flying. 3 hours later, we finally land. But, no, not in Jackson. We land IN FRICKIN ATLANTA at the same frickin gate that we took off from. Apparently, the fog was too thick to land in Jackson, so we went to Monroe. But the fog was too thick to land in Monroe, so we went to Little Rock. But the fog was too thick to land in Little Rock, so we went back to Jackson. But the fog was still too thick to land in Jackson, so we went to Montgomery. And you guessed it- the fog was too thick to land in Montgomery, so we went all the back to frickin Atlanta. (Now don't get me wrong, I am all about not trying to land a plane if we can't see the runway. But...was it really necessary to circle the entire southeast? Don't they have equipment for that sort of problem??)

And to top it off, we land at the far end of concourse T. Baggage claim is at the far end of concourse A (not that we were going to get our baggage, but baggage claim just happens to be the only way to get out of the airport). Have you ever been to the Atlanta airport? It's HUGE. The gate agent told us that it would be about 1 and 1/2 miles from our gate to baggage claim. And the tram was out of service. And there was "no one available" to drive the carts with the annoying little beep. So, at 3:00 am, we walk 1.5 miles to catch a shuttle (that never showed up) to take us to a hotel (that only had smoking rooms, smelled horrible and didn't have coffee in the lobby the next morning).

I got frisked again the next morning and got home at noon the next day. Without my $400 travel voucher.

I Was There!

It was a great night in Seattle. And you know that this football-lovin southern gal was right in the middle of it. It was one of the most intense and exciting and completely bizarre football games that I have ever been to.

We're up. We're down. We're winning. We're losing. It's a touchdown. No, it's a safety. We scored. We're gonna win. We didn't get the 2 pt conversion. We're gonna lose. Romo fumbles. We're gonna win. What the heck is going on here?? It was absolute craziness and I loved every second of it!

It was a great night at Seattle's Qwest Field. And I was there. Go 'Hawks

Random Thoughts at 4am

Hello faithful blog readers! I hope that both of you are doing well! I'm way behind...I know...we have some catching up to do! Why am I way behind you ask?? Well...I've been living in the world of messed up people who work all night and sleep all day. I am completely backwards and completely out of touch with anything that comes close to reality. And not only do I work all night, but I am currently residing in the city of absolutely no sunshine. So, when I wake up, I have to look for the little pm light on my clock to know if it is the middle of the day or the middle of the night. I'm done with the night shift. Seriously.

Only 5 more days until I come home for Christmas!! Yeah!! I am so excited! I am hoping for an uneventful flight. No CPR. No mile-high propositions. Just a relaxing, leisurely trip across the country.

I'm sure that you have been worried sick about me after seeing the news reports of the storms that hit Pacific Northwest this week. But no reason to panic...my heater works just fine. However, I am one of the lucky ones. I heard on my way to work tonight that there are still over a million people without power. My parking garage did flood, though. When I was leaving for work tonight, my favorite bellman (yes...I have a bellman) pushed me to my car on a luggage cart so that I didn't have to wade through the 6 inches of freezing cold water.

My new favorite Starbucks treat: Gingerbread Chai Tea Latte. Amazing! If the barista looks at you kinda funny, just tell him that Molly said that it is 4 pumps of chai and 3 pumps of gingerbread. And, of coarse, a little whip cream on top.

My newfound winter wonderland is in Leavenworth, Washington. It is a small Bavarian village nestled in the Cascade Mountains about 2 hours from Seattle. Famous for it's Christmas lights and spectacular Christmas trees, Leavenworth is a fascinating little village during the holiday season. I felt like I was walking around in the Christmas Village that my mom displays on top of her piano every year. Take a look at my pictures! Go to Leavenworth...it makes everything better.

Tonight has been a very strange night at work. My patient is drunk. Yes...drunk. He is an alcoholic. He also has a brain aneurysm. Number one rule when you are taking care of a patient with a brain bleeder: do not upset the patient. If you upset the patient, his blood pressure will go up. And if his blood pressure goes up, his aneurysm will get bigger. And if his aneurysm keeps getting bigger, eventually it will burste. And that would be very bad. My only orders from the neurosurgeon...and I quote..."Keep your patient in his happy place. Give him as much beer as he wants." I am checking lab work every 2 hours to make sure that my patient's blood alcohol content is greater than 0.3%. That is more than 3 times the legal limit! At least he is a pleasant drunk. He has been singing to me all night. As I write, the intoxicated version of "You Are My Sunshine". A couple of hours ago, he even wrote me a song..."Here's To You, Little Nurse That Brings Me My Beer." I am now a Miller genuine draft commercial. Nice.

I have to go. The patient is calling for his waitress. It must be miller time...

Me and Monica

This is me and my precious friend Monica. She is from Picayune and went to school at Southern Miss. Monica and I met and got to be good friends working together in the MICU at University Medical Center in Jackson. I have been begging Monica to travel with me, and finally after a year of tales of good times she decided to come along. I am so glad that she is here! We have had so much fun! We took this pic not too long ago at a Seattle Mariner's game. Wow...fun times in Seattle!! The stadium is really nice and is supposedly one of the best places in the leage to watch a game. It is no Dudy Noble Field, but it is really nice and definitely a great time!

On the Road Again

My three months in Phoenix have come and gone and I'm moving on. I loved the time that I spent in Arizona, but lets be honest here...it was 72006cactus1.jpghot as hell and I was ready to go. Not that I didn't love my time there, because I very much did. However, I'm done with 125 degree days and 100 degree nights. Yes, I know its a "dry heat" as everyone at home so kindly kept reminding me...but it hurts. Yes, I know you don't sweat like you do in Mississippi, but you can literally feel it burning you skin and sucking the life right out of you. But enough complaining for now... Despite the scorchers, I can't say that I haven't looked back--because, I look back often. I had a great job that I loved. I was privaleged to work with incredible nurses that were both knowledgeable and extremely welcoming. I experienced the magnitude of the Grand Canyon and the simplicity of the desert. I spent a weekend in Mexico and rode on a pink chariot through the beatiful red rocks of Sedona. I even drank my way down the Salt River in an intertube. Fun times!

72006cactus2.jpgBut, in the words of my man Willie..."On the road again. Just can't wait to get on the road again. Going places that I've never been. Seeing things I may never see again, I just can't wait to get on the road again."

Seattle bound! (Talk about going from one extreme to the other!) Mom flew from Jackson to once again be my co-pilot on the treck to the Pacific North West. We had so much fun!! It was suprisingly a really easy, quick drive. We of coarse made some stops along the way to make it a real road trip.

Day 1: Phoenix to the Grand Canyon. A whoppin 3 hours total driving time! I loved the time that I spent at the canyon and I really wanted my mother to have the opportunity to do the same. It was as spectacular as it was the first time. We got to the canyon rim just before sunset as a storm was rolling in. It was awesome!

Day 2: Phoenix, Az to Page, Az. A whoppin 2.5 total driving time! This was one of my most memorable days that I spent in Arizona...too bad it 706antelope17.jpgwas the last! But, I'm glad that I got to spend it with mom! We started out at Antelope Canyon. It's hard to describe...bear with me. It is an underground slot canyon. The bottom of the canyon is just wide enough to be able to walk through, and top of the canyon at ground level pretty must just has small cracks and holes where light can peep in. So, it is dimly lit by the light beams that come in through the cracks at the top of the canyon. It is so neat!! If you are in the canyon at high noon, you literally see the beams of light hitting the floor of the canyon. I love it! It is a very well kept secret on a Navajo reservation, but you need to find it if you are ever on a tour of the southwest.

molly and sue, antelope canyon

Mom was pretty worn out after our morning at the Grand Canyon and mid-day hike through Antelope Canyon, but I told her we had one more horseshoe bendplace to go....she wasn't very happy about it, but she humored me like a good mother should. Horesehoe Bend. It is where the Colorado River flows in a horseshoe shape through the Grand Canyon. We had to hike uphill 0.8 miles to get to the top (I didn't tell mom that until we got there), but it was worth every step. You get to the top of the hill and you really can't see much--looking straight ahead all that you see is desert. But, when you step to the rim of the canyon and look down....it literally took our breath away. My mother screamed in excitement. Really...she was screaming. She called it her Garden of Eden. I couldn't agree more.

Moving right along! This is the Rainbow Bridge and definitely is another one of my favorites. It also is on a Navajo reservation and is extremely sacred to these people. It is quite a task getting to it , but well worth it!

From here to Seattle it was all work and no play...but we had fun. So far, all is well ad I am loving Seattle. Stay tuned...more pics and tales of good times coming soon!

Grand Canyon

2006grandcanyon198.JPG

Hello from Phoenix! It's hot, but we are doing great! We are still really enjoying Phoenix. Only 6 weeks left. I can't believe how fast it is going! No time to spare...lots to do and lots to see before we head to....wherever we are going to head to next. You know us, always up to something!

2006grandcanyon106.JPGOur latest: The Grand Canyon. Awesome. Absolutely breathtaking. We had a wonderful time. Note to all of my married blogg readers out there: a very romantic place. I love Maggie and all...but, you know. Like I said, it was a great trip and I would love to go back if anyone was up for a trip. : ) I took a million pictures, but unfortunately I was pretty disappointed with them when I got home. They just do not come close to doing it justice. You just can't fit the magniture Grand Canyon into a picture. But you know me...I tried!

Posted by Picasa We stayed in a little bity, ity bity, tiny, we're talking nothing to it town right outside of the Grand Canyon National Park. There are a few 2006grandcanyon275.JPGhotels and a McDonalds (which I accidently stole a bottle of water from...a fugitive on the run). It was a nice escape from city life though. We spent our first afternoon on National Park Service tour that takes you to each overlook point. Other than the drunk tour guide that would not leave us alone, it was really fun. We finished the afternoon off watching the sunset from the highest point over the canyon. It was incredible, there are no words to describe it. After taking the Infinity off road to chase an elk through the desert, we headed back to "town" for a night out...we were in bed by 10:00.

2006grandcanyon243.JPG

The next morning we got an early start for sunrise over the canyon. In my entire life, I will never forget experiencing the glory of God in the sunset and sunrise over the Grand Canyon. There is absolutely nothing in the this world that could possible come close. It is spectacular.

After our sunrise service, we were starving so we decided to hit the "town" to find continental breakfast at one of the hotels. No luck. Forced to 2006grandcanyon132.JPGstarve until Mickey D's opened up. And then we were off for more. Yes...we made it to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. No...we did not hike it there. We thought about it. But we stoped thinking about it when one of the park rangers told us that we were not as in shape as we thought we were. Jerk. Seeing as how we are "not in shape" fpr the 9 mile one way hike, we had to figure something else out. The mule rides were all sold out for the day, so we opted for the princess route: a leisurly raft trip through the canyon. It was wonderful! Maybe not so much of a "rafting" trip as a "float" trip. No white water. No rapids. A bus picked up us, drove us to the bottom of the canyon, we hopped on our yaght and we literally floated 20 miles down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. It was beautiful! Very relaxing and a really neat way to see the base of the canyon.

Rafting the Colorado

After sunrise, we were starving so we hit the "town" to find continental breakfast at one of the hotels. No luck. Forced to starve. Note: if you ever go...take food. And then, off for more.
